How It Works

The participants in each team, maximum of 10 people, all become Artisan Leather Specialists for a day. The team learns how to make a small leather accessory starting with the raw materials through to the finished item. The group manages each stage of the production process by working together as a team. Moreover, in order to complete the task each person must choose a role, which involves performing a manual task they have never done before.

The challenge not only lies in learning how to hand-cut leather, precisely glue and hand-sew the individual pieces together, carefully painting the edges; but also in deciding the best way of working together as a team to create the finished product. There are many different stages in the production process and errors may occur at any given moment. An indvidual’s mistake will affect the person working on the next stage of the process. How do you resolve unexpected issues or errors? The answer is to have an efficient team, one that is able to communicate clearly, identify problems and is willing to work together to find a solution.

During the workshop a Master Leather Artisan guides participants through every stage of the handmaking process. At the same time an Occupational Psychologist, expert in group psychology, analyses the team dynamics as they are unfolding. The psychologist shares insights at each stage of the process and invites the participants to reflect on how they might implement new ideas or change their behaviours in their daily working practices, thereby fostering new ideas and new thinking which can lead to positive change.
